Recount His Goodness

"O my God, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, And from the heights of Hermon, From the Hill Mizar" (Ps 42: 6).

The psalmist deliberately set his mind to recount the Lord and His goodness in times of despair. The psalmist was training his soul, not to be disquieted but to hope in God. We too must also train our soul and mind to deliberately recount the goodness of the Lord within our lives. Moses did it (Deut 3) and Joshua did it (Josh 24). They often spoke of the victories God led them through, deliberately reminding the people of God’s faithfulness as a backdrop to His steadfastness.

Do not take it for granted that you have to purposefully remind yourself of God’s goodness. Our minds and hearts can be so fickle - on one day we can be full of joy, excitement and hope of what God is doing. Then in an instant we can forget His hand and complain under the pressures of life. No my friends in order to stay constant in Christ, you cannot leave it to chance. You must deliberately set, train and focus your eyes on God's goodness. The men of old used stones as physical markers to remind them of God’s visitation to them (Gen 28: 18; Josh 4: 5-7; 1 Sam 7: 12). We too need to keep reminders of the Lord's intervention within our lives.

My encouragement to you today is to stay connected to God. Consistently pray, read the Word, sing His praises and commune with Him during the day. Show God that you are choosing to keep your eyes fixed on Him and will be recounting His goodness in the land of the living.

Prayer

Lord I need you, I can become so easily discouraged and forget Your goodness towards me. Today however I choose to set my gaze on You. Train my mind, my heart and soul to pursue You and constantly recount all of the ways in which You have come through for me. I testify of Your goodness this day. You are good and Your mercy endures forever. I sing Your praises everyday. I thank You, for who You are - the infinite One in Jesus name. Amen.
