When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die” (Gen 42:1-2).
These verses have always stood out to me, “why do you look at one another...go down to that place and buy for us there?” The reason those verses grabbed my attention was because sometimes we can sit on a dream, or talk about it, we can often “look at each other”, but Jacob’s call to action in times of desperation was a directive to go and get!
The reality is that some people are only driven to action when they are forced in a position to do so. Often times business ideas are birthed in the times of need and your solution fits the problem. Some of us also exude great creativity when we are squeezed to think beyond the present circumstances. The question is, once you see an opportunity for your idea and heard that there is grain in Egypt, what will you do? Will you sit still or will you move?
When it comes to our relationship with God, it can be much the same way. There are some of us who only go to God in times of desperation, when there there is a famine and we feel the squeeze and pressures of life. If hardship is what drives you to God however, He will use those times of desperation to get your attention. The question is, once He has gotten your attention what will you do? Will you continue to go to Him? Will you continue to go to the Living Water and Bread of Life to nourish your spirit and soul, so that you may live and not die?
My encouragement today is to get up and go. Continue to go to the Living Water. "Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk, without money and without price" (Is 55:1). The great thing about going to God is that receiving His salvation is free! In times of desperation yes run to God, but then stay there with Him, there is no need to leave. Stay there that you may live!
Prayer
Lord let me run to You so that I may live and not die. Let me stay with You and in Your presence. Let me dwell in the land and feed on Your faithfulness. Let me not leave and only return in times of desperation, but let me stay and continually be satisfied with the Living Water. In Jesus' name Amen.
