Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land (Ruth 1:1)Why does the scripture take effort to include that phrase, to let us know it was around the time when the judges ruled?

In the day of Judges, people did what was right in their own eyes. That sounds much like today. In the day of Judges we have the Israelites constantly turning their hearts away from God, coming and going to Him and not fully being committed to Him. We have scenes where people have household idols and carved images, but are still hiring Levites as personal priests (Judges 17:3, Judges 18:20). The Israelites truly wanted freedom to do as they pleased.

Are you going to God then leaving, going and coming, never fully surrendering to Him? My encouragement to you today is not to fall into the trap of having a false sense of security. Believing that it is ok to have idols and images carved in your heart, but because you may attend church services, or say the occasional prayers, that somehow you believe God is satisfied with that heart position. That God is satisfied with you having an appearance of godliness, but truthfully you have not made Him Lord of your life.

I encourage you to surrender all of your heart to Him. The Lord wants all of your heart and for you to be fully surrendered to Him (Matthew 22: 37). He wants you to lay aside all of your idols. And if you find that you are unable to fully surrender to Him, ask God to show you those hidden idols and He will be more than willing to reveal them.

Prayer

Lord, show me those things in my heart that displease You. Lord, I no longer want to do what is pleasing in my own eyes and that displeases You. Show me those idols in my life that need to be removed and let me cast down every single thing that wants to exalt itself above You. I ask you these things In Jesus’ name. Amen
