Judges, a time when everyone did what was right in their own eyes. A time when idolatry and false worship was rampant. A time that sounds much like today. In Judges 18 we have a Levite who was hired to be the personal priest of a man called Micah, this Levite was then later taken away by Danites to become priests over that tribe. When the Levite heard that the Danites wanted to establish him as a priest over their tribe, he went back into Micah’s house and grabbed the household idols and carved images (Judges 18:20).

Two things to draw to our attention. Firstly, the priestly post the Levite was going into for the Danites was certainly a post established by men. Be wary of running into ministry and setting yourself up on posts that men and not God has called you to. Secondly, the Levite who was to represent the true God of Israel grabbed with him the household idols. I am not sure if the Levite first felt uncomfortable seeing the household gods in Micah’s house when he was first hired to be his priest, but even if he was, by now he was no longer uncomfortable. In fact he was no longer uncomfortable and grabbed the idols to go with him to his next priestly duties.

I want to encourage us not to grow complacent, to become familiar with the things that God detests. To not only becoming familiar with those things He hates, but then beginning to practice them. Make every effort to guard your heart, make every effort to establish the boundaries of holiness, and make every effort to fight against the tide of ungodliness.

Prayer

Lord, purge away from our hearts the things that disdain You. Let us not become complacent and lukewarm with sin. Help us to hate the things that You hate, to turn aside and seek righteousness and holiness. Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. To God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.

Amen.
